Local Attractions
Blackstone Edge overlooks the Lancashire towns of Rochdale and Littleborough and forms the boundary between Lancashire & Yorkshire. It is also a landmark on the Pennine Way long distance footpath, which passes along the top of the outcrop on route from Edale in the Derbyshire Peak Districk to Kirk Yetholm in Scotland. There is also an ancient track, believed to date from Roman times, where distinct wheel grooves can be identified and was probably one of the main routes crossing from east to west across the Pennine Hills.
A short distance from The White House you will find Hollingworth Lake. A country park consisting of a lake and surrounding countryside, with boating, nature reserve, trails, guided walks, visitor centre and play areas.
Facilities in the area include caravan
and camping sites, craft shops and cafes. It is a surprising haven for
wildlife and provides entertainment for the young and not so young.
The lake is a popular destination that
was originally built to supply water
to the recently re-opened Rochdale Canal.
This canal runs 33 miles
between Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire and Manchester. It is now
open for navigation along the whole of the route since the re-opening
of the Littleborough to Manchester section in 2002.
Not far from The White House, on the Yorkshire side, is the pretty town of Hebden Bridge known as the “Pennine Centre”. Hebden Bridge takes its name from the packhorse bridge over Hebden Water. Since traditional industries (textiles) are no longer, the buildings have been stone cleaned and revitalised making it a lovely place to visit.
